Healthier Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

These easy Healthier Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are a delightful twist on a classic and combine the perfect blend of chewiness with a sprinkle of powdered sugar magic. Chocolate crinkle cookies are a popular holiday treat and are enjoyed year-round. Rich chocolate flavor and appealing appearance make them a favorite for many people.

The name “crinkle” refers to the distinctive cracks that form on the surface of the cookies during baking. This cracking effect is achieved by rolling the cookie dough balls in powdered sugar before baking. As the cookies expand in the oven, the dough underneath the sugar coating cracks, creating the characteristic crinkle pattern.

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies Secret Ingredient – White Whole Wheat Flour

By incorporating whole wheat flour, you will add a nutty undertone to the cookies while increasing their fiber content. This simple switch not only enhances the flavor but also provides a more nutritionally dense option. I like to use the King Arthur, 100% Organic White Whole Wheat Flour.

Sweetening with Coconut Sugar

I’ve replaced the typical white sugar with coconut sugar, a natural sweetener that imparts a caramel-like flavor to the cookies. Not only does coconut sugar have a lower glycemic index, which can help regulate blood sugar levels, but it also contains small amounts of vitamins and minerals. I like to use the Anthonys Organic Coconut Sugar.

Gather all Ingredients

To get started, you’ll need the following ingredients: cocoa powder, coconut sugar, light olive oil, large eggs, vanilla extract, white whole wheat flour, baking powder, salt, and confectioners sugar.

Ingredients for Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

How to make Healthier Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

  1. First, in a mixing bowl, combine sugar, cocoa powder, oil, vanilla extract and eggs. Whisk until the mixture is smooth. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture to the cocoa mixture and stir to combine. Then, cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours and up to overnight.
  1. Next, preheat the oven to 350F. Scoop dough with a scoop or spoon for even portioning into 20 cookies. Roll cookie dough into even-sized balls and generously roll each into powdered sugar.
  2. Finally, place cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leave space between each of the cookies. Bake for about 12-15 minutes. Cookies will come out soft but will harden as they cool down. Allow cookies to slightly cool. Then, move them to a wire rack to fully cool down.

Tips for Success:

  • Chill the Dough: Enhance the chewy texture. It helps the dough firm up for easier handling.
  • Uniform Ball Size: Ensure even baking by shaping uniform-sized dough balls, guaranteeing a consistent crinkle effect.
  • Quality Ingredients: Elevate the flavor by using high-quality cocoa powder, whole wheat flour, and fresh eggs.
